Barley
The domesticated plant Hordeum vulgare, whose grain is utilized by man for various purposes:
  • feed barley varieties, utilized for feeding of livestock.
  • malting barley varieties (containing beta-amylase in their seeds) were created via mutation breeding (i.e., bombardment of the seeds by ionizing radiation to cause random genetic mutations, followed by selection of the particular mutation in which maltose is produced by that barley plant in its seeds).
